| This Emergency Medical Technician Training Course is designed to prepare and qualify a student to take the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) EMT written and psychomotor tests for certification as an EMT. After successful completion of the EMT training course, the student will be capable of performing the following functions:
Perform a rapid and detailed assessment of a patient with a medical or traumatic emergency.
Recognize the nature and seriousness of the patient’s condition or extent of injuries to assess requirements for emergency medical care.
Give life-saving interventions to treat problems associated with airway, breathing, and circulation.
Administer appropriate emergency medical care based on assessment findings of the patient’s condition.
Given a mass casualty incident, perform triage.
Perform safely and effectively the expectations of the job description of the EMT.
The EMT course is 120 hours in length with an additional 12 or more hours are spent in a clinical setting gaining hands–on experience treating patients.
The course is competency–based. Students must demonstrate a level of skills proficiency prior to receiving recommendation for certification.
Pre- Requisites:
1. All participants must be 18 years of age or older.
2. All students MUST have a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff for this course. This may be purchased at the time of registration for $35 or from local retailers.
3. CPR Prerequisite—All students are required to have a current healthcare provider level CPR certification before beginning the course. We will offer certification for $50 on the first day of class for those who do not have CPR certification. You may choose to take a CPR course on your own before the EMT course. If you do, it must be one of the following CPR certifications: Please note that CPR certification through the BYU Advanced First Aid course (HLTH 320) does not meet the CPR certification requirements. If you obtain CPR certification on your own, a copy of your card MUST be emailed to the instructor (prodev@byu.edu) before the second day of class. The American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider and the American Red Cross – Professional Rescuer CPR certifications meet the standards for this class.
4. Criminal Background Check — A background check is conducted by the BYU University Police the first week of class.
5. Tuberculosis Test Prerequisite — Tuberculosis test within the 12 months prior to the first night of class. This can be obtained at the BYU Student Health Center, Utah County Health Department, or from your primary care physician. If you have had a previous positive TB test, please see the Bureau of EMS guidelines at the Utah Department of Health website. Tuberculosis test results must be turned in the first week of class. |
