This fundamental introduction to Mandarin Chinese focuses on pinyin and character background, pronunciation, grammar, tones, and Simplified Chinese characters. This course makes use of a Conversation Café to practice speaking with other students, teaching assistants, and the instructor. This is the first course in a four-part Chinese series (CHIN 041, 043, 051, and 053).

All speaking appointments require high-speed internet access (hardwired if possible) and a computer with a webcam, a microphone, and speakers or headphones.

Access to a printer and scanner or digital camera is also necessary for written assignments.
