Stake Instructions for Adult Religion Classes

The salt lake temple at sunset
  1. The local stake approves an instructor, course of study from the approved CES course offerings (listed below), and the time and location for the class. The stake may contact the local CES area office for teacher recommendations. The registration fee for adult religion classes is set by CES Continuing Education and cannot be changed locally. The fee is $1.25 per 90 minutes of class instruction. Classes are taught once per week for a period of anywhere from ten to seventeen weeks. A typical class is taught for fifteen weeks at $18.75 per participant.

  2. The stake president or his representative appoints an individual to be the class chairperson.

  3. The chairperson contacts the CES Continuing Education office and provides the following information:

    1. Sponsoring stake.

    2. Instructor (name, phone, and address).

    3. Approved CES Adult Religion Class title.

    4. Dates, time and location of class.

    5. Number of weeks the class will be held.

    6. Chairperson (name, address, and phone).

      * Information for the class should be sent to the CES Continuing Education office by the following dates. CES Continuing Education will produce a promotional flyer to advertise the classes and will list the program on its website http://ce.byu.edu/ed.

For classes to begin: Please submit class information before:
      Winter (January-April) November 20
      Spring (May-June) March 20
      Summer (July-August) May 20

  4. CES Continuing Education sends the instructor the following forms (if not already submitted) to complete and return to CES before the class begins.

    1. Instructor Information Form

    2. Bishop's Clearance Form (for CES part-time or volunteer, or non-CES instructors only).

    3. Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate (Form W-4)

    4. Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9)

    5. For payroll purposes, but separate from the I-9 process, we require a copy of the employee's Social Security Card to be mailed to CES Continuing Education.

    6. Directions to receive direct deposit.

    7. CES Continuing Education Employee Contract (this will be sent to the instructor after these forms have been received by CES Continuing Education).

  5. Publicity for the classes and registration of students is the responsibility of the locally appointed class representative in cooperation with the class teacher. No minimum number of adult registrations is required.

  6. CES Continuing Education sends the chairperson a packet of materials for registration and promotion of the class and will also provide a master flyer to be printed and distributed by the stake. Only flyers generated by the CES Continuing Education office can use the "Adult Religion Classes" or the "Church Educational System" names. Students requesting information regarding classes may contact CES Continuing Education for a list or visit the website at http://ce.byu.edu/ed . Once your class information has been received, the class will be posted on the website.

  7. The registration fees are collected by the class chairperson. Checks are to be made payable to CES-Adult Religion Classes. The funds are then mailed to CES Continuing Education with an accounting form from CES Continuing Education containing the following information: Host Stake, Instructor, chairperson information, and dates of the class.
