Church Educational System Continuing Education Programs
Adult Religion Class-General Guidelines

Organized under the Church Educational System (CES) and Brigham Young University Continuing Education (both entities of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) CES Continuing Education is a resource to priesthood leaders and members to provide religious continuing education opportunities for youth and adult members of the Church. These opportunities comprise approved "Optional Enrichment Activities" (Church Handbook of Instructions: Book 1 Stake Presidencies and Bishoprics, 2006, p. 160) and are funded by participant tuition (Church Handbook of Instructions, p. 134).

Specific CES Continuing Education programs, dates, and locations are listed on the Internet at: ce.byu.edu/ed. For additional information about these programs, local CES representatives or priesthood leaders should contact CES Continuing Education at 800-992-1014.

  1. Adult religion classes are noncredit classes.

  2. Adult religion classes are to be financially self-sustaining.

  3. Each adult religion student must pay the tuition fee; audits are not allowed (exceptions include full-time CES employees and their spouses and CES retirees and their spouses, who may have Special Admission cards that permit them to attend without charge).

  4. The registration fee for adult religion classes is set by CES Continuing Education and cannot be changed locally. The tuition for adult religion classes is $1.25 per week for a full registration or $2.50 per lecture if paid separately each week (i.e. if class is held for 10 weeks the total tuition would be 10 x $1.25=$12.50).

  5. Adult religion classes are for adults and should typically consist of one class of approximately ninety minutes per week for a period of ten to seventeen weeks.

  6. The course of study must be selected from the CES Institute of Religion "Approved Course" list.

  7. The local stake president should approve the course of study and the class day and time and recommend a teacher. The recommended teacher should be strongly encouraged to utilize the institute student manuals as a guide and a resource in their teaching.

  8. Prior to the beginning of an Adult Religion Class, the recommended teacher will work directly with the CES Continuing Education office to complete all the necessary hiring documents.

  9. The stake president or his representative appoints an individual to be the class chairperson.

  10. CES Continuing Education is contacted and given information about the proposed adult religion classes.

  11. Publicity for the classes and registration of students is the responsibility of the locally appointed class chairperson in cooperation with the class teacher. No minimum number of adult registrations is required.

  12. Checks should be made payable to CES Adult Religion Classes. The chairperson is responsible to mail the funds to the CES Continuing Education office in the self-addressed envelopes provided. All funds must be accompanied by an accounting form provided by the CES Continuing Education office and contain the following information: Host Stake, Instructor, chairperson information, and dates of the Adult Religion Classes.

  13. An approved flyer for the Adult Religion Classes will be prepared by CES Continuing Education and forwarded to the stake for copying and distribution. Advertising and teaching material expenses can be deducted from the tuition fees (expenses may not exceed 15 percent of tuition fees), and the honorarium payment will be determined by the remaining income.

  14. After the classes have been completed and all forms and fees have been received, CES Continuing Education will pay the teacher an honorarium based on the amount of tuition received for the classes. A copy of the honorarium schedule is available from CES Continuing Education.

  15. Full-time CES personnel interested in teaching Adult Religion Classes must coordinate with their area director to assure that their participation meets approved CES policies.
