Young Musicians' Summer Festival

Trumpet

Faculty: David C. Brown

Enrollment is limited to 18 trumpet students

SummerFestival provides a week in which you can immerse yourself in the art of trumpet playing. You will work closely with BYU faculty on a daily basis and have the opportunity to meet and perform with some of the finest young musicians from around the country. You will have daily rehearsals and several performances with outstanding ensembles in a variety of mediums ranging from symphony orchestra to jazz combo. You can refine your skills and expand your musical knowledge by attending trumpet master classes, music theory, and literature classes.

Performance opportunities may include the following: Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra, Big Band Jazz, Jazz Combos, Small Brass Ensembles, Choir, Master classes, and Sectionals.

Skills needed:

  • Comfort with basic sound production.
  • Fluency with scales up to five sharps and five flats.
  • Ability to sight-read in a variety of keys and meters.
  • Minimum range requirements are from low F# to the G at the top of the staff.
  • Placement on first parts will require a range up to high C.
  • Placement in the orchestra will require transposition skills.
  • The standard orchestral transpositions include C, D, Eb, E, F, A, and Ab.

Auditions:

  • Auditions will take place on Monday morning, the first day of the festival.
  • Auditions are approximately 10 minutes long, and the results will be used to place you in the various ensembles.
  • Prepare the following:
  • Scales up to four sharps and four flats
  • A two-octave chromatic scale demonstrating your range
  • A solo or etude that demonstrates your strengths and abilities
  • Be prepared to sight-read a short selection (sight-reading should be a part of your daily routine)
  • If you are interested in playing in the orchestra, you will be asked to transpose a passage from the literature that will be performed during the week. While fluency with transposition is the goal, I will also consider those who have the ability to "work out" the transpositions quickly.

Suggested Equipment:

  • B-flat trumpet or cornet in good repair
  • C trumpets may be used in the orchestra if you have one and are comfortable performing on it. If not, your B-flat will be fine.
  • Flugelhorns will probably be needed if you play in the jazz band (we can provide one for you if you don't have your own).
  • Straight mute for orchestra and band
  • Straight mute, harmon mute, and cup mute if you play in the jazz band (we can provide these for you if you don't have your own)
