Young Musicians' Summer Festival

Horn

Faculty: Laurence M. Lowe

Enrollment is limited to 16 horn players

Horn players will participate in at least one large ensemble, either orchestra or band. In addition, students may be in brass or woodwind quintets and in horn ensembles. Each player will have a group coaching with the horn staff each day.

Students will be directed toward preparing the concert literature for the week and toward audition preparation for entrance into college music schools. One outstanding student will be chosen to play at the student recital, so bring your solos and accompaniments. On the final day, you will play in your large ensemble's concert. If you are selected for a chamber group or horn ensemble, you will perform as well.

In the audition, you will be asked to play a solo, etudes, or orchestral excerpts that demonstrate your skill in playing high, low, fast, and slow. You will also sight read. An accompanist is not required.

Players should be able to play eighth-note scales (quarter = 144) in keys up to five flats (see ranges below) and be able to sight-read in 2/3, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, and 9/8. Ranges are from E below the treble clef staff to G at the top of the staff.

The skills gained at SummerFestival give you a head start in preparation for the auditions at BYU or for any other major music school.
