Young Musicians' Summer Festival

Bassoon

Faculty: Christian B. Smith

Enrollment is limited to 6 bassoonists

Performance activities for SummerFestival bassoonists range from band, orchestra, choir, and chamber music.

Each bassoonist will be given a private lesson during the week, and will attend several masterclasses. Masterclasses will focus on the fundamentals of bassoon performance, such as: tone production, tonguing, finger technique, articulation, reed-making, and more.
In preparation for SummerFest, it is suggested (not required) that bassoonists be able to perform the following:

  • major scales to 3 flats/sharps, two octaves if possible
  • chromatic scale, 2 octaves if possible
  • sight-read music in time signatures of 2/4, 3/4, 4/4

For ensemble auditions, bassoonists should prepare two contrasting etudes taken from Weissenborn’s Fifty Advanced Studies (or equivalent), and be ready to perform any of the aforementioned scale and sight-reading requirements.
