REGISTRATION
Who can attend?
Males and females between the ages of 14 and 18 (during the camp) are eligible to attend. We are sorry, but if you are 13, you will need to wait one more year. College students are not eligible.

Can I wait until May to register?
Some instrument sections are usually full soon after registration opens. The fill rate varies from year to year. We strongly recommend registering as early as possible.

How many attend the workshop?
Each year approximately 250 to 280 students attend SummerFestival. Enrollment in each instrument program varies. See Performance Standards for further details.

When can I register?
Registration will open in January 2008.

What are the prices?
Registration Fee: $395 (includes daily lunch and Monday evening barbecue)
Food and Housing Fee: $210

Can I make a deposit?
We are unable to accept deposits. Full payment is due upon registration.

What are the dates for 2009?
June 14–20, 2009

What if I don’t have a credit card to register by Internet/phone?
You can mail in a check with the participant’s name, address, phone number, and Social Security number (used for identification purposes only and kept strictly confidential). When the check and information are received, you will be registered. The only risk with this method is that housing or the instrument section may fill before your form is received.

When will I receive more information?
1) A receipt will arrive in the mail in 7 to 10 working days. Please check the receipt for accuracy. 2) All prearrival information will be available on the Web page.

My parent(s) work(s) on campus. Do I get a discount?
Discounts are not available.

I have a disability—can you accommodate me in the residence halls/program?
Yes. Those with disabilities who want to apply should call (801) 422-7692 to speak with the program administrator.

PROGRAM QUESTIONS
What kind of musical background do I need?
Participants should have completed substantial musical training and have sufficient technique development. See Performance Standards for details.

Who teaches at the workshop?
Faculty from the BYU School of Music are the primary instructors. Guest instructors are invited from the community.

Why is it held in June each year? Can’t you change the dates?
In order for our outstanding School of Music faculty to teach, the program is held the last week of spring term at BYU (during finals). Many of the faculty are assigned to summer tours at the beginning of summer term and would not be available if we changed the dates.

What do we do each day?
Your daily schedule depends upon which instrument you are studying and may include band, orchestra, symphony, improvisation, and/or choir rehearsals along with literature, theory, sectional/master classes, and personal/group practice times.

What happens on Saturday?
SummerFestival concludes with final concerts (jazz) on Friday evening and final concerts and a reception on Saturday in the Harris Fine Arts Center. Chamber concerts will be held in the morning, with large ensemble and selected soloists performing in the afternoon. There is a reception on Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the HFAC Gallery. The reception will include an array of refreshments and is open to SummerFestival participants and their families.
Family and friends are welcome to attend the concerts on Friday and Saturday.

Do we have activities in the evenings?
Yes. Activities may include recitals and concerts along with a barbecue, dances, field games, jam sessions, and a silent movie accompanied by an organist. All participants are invited to attend.

What are the auditions all about?
Auditions are held on Monday morning for placement into groups. Audition requirements vary for each section. Please refer to Performance Standards for complete descriptions.

When is check-in?
Check-in is Sunday evening. Campus housing participants may check in from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Heritage Halls Central Building. Commuters may check in from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Harris Fine Arts Center gallery.

When is check-out?
Participants must check out of their rooms by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday. Luggage may be stored at Heritage Halls Central Building until the concerts have concluded.

What if I don’t arrive until after orientation?
If you arrive after the orientation on Sunday and you are registered for housing, please go to the residence hall to receive your housing assignment. If you are not staying on campus, go directly to the HFAC (Harris Fine Arts Center) on Monday at 8:00 a.m. or call (801) 422-7692.

HOUSING
Should I stay in campus housing or commute?
This is an individual decision. If you stay in campus housing, you will have a counselor (one counselor for every ten participants). Counselors will coordinate devotionals (scripture, song, and prayer) each evening. Campus participants are not allowed to leave the dorms after the head count. Commuters need to be picked up by an adult after the evening rehearsals/activities.

If I don’t stay in housing, where can I eat?
Workshop participants eat in the Morris Center cafeteria. Those staying in housing are given a meal card for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Those who are commuting are given a meal card for lunches only. You may also buy meals on a day-to-day basis in the cafeteria. Meals range from $6.50 to $8.50.

How much does it cost for campus housing? What does it cover?
The cost is $200. It covers double-occupancy accommodations in campus residence halls from Sunday evening through Friday evening, with bed and bath linen provided. Meals are provided from Sunday dinner through the following Saturday lunch.

When do I check in and out of housing?
See PROGRAM questions

Where is the housing?
Campus housing is in either Heritage Halls or Helaman Halls. That decision is made in late January. Housing is available on a “first-come, first-served” basis until the spaces are filled. Early registration is encouraged as spaces are limited. We can confirm availability of housing instantaneously if you register by phone or Web.

What are the housing arrangements?
Residence halls are double occupancy with shared bathrooms down the hall.

How can I be matched up with my preferred roommate?
To request a specific roommate, you must provide a roommate’s name when registering. The roommate must also give us your name with his or her registration. If you register and choose a roommate but that person doesn’t register for housing by the time it is filled or doesn’t enroll, you will be paired up with another participant attending the program.

Can I have a roommate who is attending another youth program?
No, you must room with someone attending the same program.

Is early housing available?
If transportation scheduling requires you to arrive a day early, you may do so. You are responsible to pay a special housing fee that covers the cost of lodging and supervision until the program officially begins. Meals are available in the all-you-can-eat cafeterias for a moderate price. Contact BYU Student Auxiliary Services at http://www.byu.edu/confservices/housing/early.html to make your early arrival arrangements.

I will be arriving late. What do I need to do?
See PROGRAM questions

What should I bring?
Bed and bath linen are provided. Bring extra towels, alarm clock, bar soap, shampoo, slippers, drinking cup, bathrobe, sweats, and personal items.

TRAVEL

Is there a BYU shuttle service from the Salt Lake City International Airport to BYU?
BYU does not coordinate any shuttle services between the Salt Lake City Airport and Provo. There are companies that offer shuttle services between the airport and Provo, but you will need to contact them directly. You can call Express Shuttle at 1-800-397-0773. It is up to each participant to find his or her own transportation to and from BYU. For more information, see our Web page on travel.

Can you give me the names and phone numbers of other participants in my session so I can make carpool arrangements?
Unfortunately, this is confidential information that we are unable to give out.

MISCELLANEOUS

What is the BYU Honor Code?
Honor Code Website

Admission and Standards: BYU Continuing Education programs do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, or ethnic or national origin. Participants attending the workshop are required to uphold guidelines as represented in the Honor Code. They must maintain the standards of Brigham Young University (i.e., high standards of honor, integrity, language, and morality; abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, and harmful drugs; and modesty in dress). Shorts and skirts worn on campus must be knee length; no sleeveless shirts, bare midriffs, or tank tops are permitted.

Dress standards are strictly enforced. Participants found in violation of the Honor Code are subject to immediate dismissal without a refund. Parents are responsible for picking up a participant who has been dismissed and paying any costs incurred for transportation. We are committed to providing a learning atmosphere that reasonably accommodates persons with disabilities who are otherwise qualified. Prior to registration, applicants with disabilities are invited to discuss the program content and available facilities with the program director.

What should I wear?
Participants may wear pants or shorts to class. The concerts, recitals, and dances require Sunday dress (shirt, tie, slacks for young men—no levis; dresses and skirts for young women). All clothing must adhere to the dress standards listed in the BYU Honor Code.

What will the weather be like?
Weather could be rather warm during the program. Average high temperature in June is 85–90 degrees F; average low is 65 degrees F. Come prepared for changeable weather and varying indoor room temperatures.

How can I find out more information on the School of Music?
Information is available on the School of Music Web site or call (801) 422-3537.
