9th Annual Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers Workshop

Credit Requirements

To receive BYU credit for this program, students should be in good standing with both Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (if a member). All students are expected to uphold the university standards while in class.

Preparations for the Workshop:

Our instructors require two picture book manuscripts from students in the picture book workshops; the first 2 chapters of a chapter book or novel from students in the early chapter book or novel workshops; and a portfolio from students in the illustration workshop. Please come to the first day of your workshops (Monday) with the pages specified and be prepared to make copies for everyone in the class on the day you share your writing. If your instructor has different or additional requirements for your workshop, those will be noted on his or her registration page.

 

Requirements for EL ED 514R; SC ED 514R, 2 Credit Hours (Pass/Fail)

  1. Attend all sessions of the workshop, including one specifically for credit participants on Monday  at 8:15 a.m.
  2. Write, polish, and submit 15–20 manuscript pages produced in your workshop. If you are working on a picture book, send one picture book manuscript. Manuscripts should be typed, double-spaced, with your name, address, email, telephone number, target audience, and workshop instructor in the upper left corner.
  3. Write a two to four page (double-spaced) synthesis paper of your workshop experience. Focus on what you learned as a writer, about writing, and about publishing.
  4. Read books written for young readers in your area of interest and write a 100–300 word summary/analysis of each book. The books should be written by workshop authors. The number of books you read depends on the kinds of books you select.
    • 5 picture books or,
    • 2 middle grade novels or,
    • 1 young adult novel or,
    • 2 nonfiction/informational books
  5. Submit all assignments to Cheri Earl no later than Tuesday, July 8, 2008.

Requirements for EL Ed 514R; SC ED 514R, 1 Credit Hour (Pass/Fail)

  1. Attend a minimum of 12.5 hours of afternoon sessions of the workshop (mingle, plenary, and breakout sessions). Keep an attendance log and record your responses to each presentation and activity you attend. Please put your name, address, email, and telephone number in the upper left corner of the first page of your log.
  2. Write a one to two page (double-spaced) synthesis paper of your workshop experience. Focus on what you learned as a writer, about writing, and about publishing.
