(38) Value-able Story Time - Early Childhood Literacy
Description: One way that we can teach our children values is through character-based children's books. Research has repeatedly demonstrated that when children listen to stories, they not only gain crucial language skills, but open their minds to fun and imagination. Reading aloud "value-able" children's literature adds the dimensions of character education and emotional bonding with the parent reading the stories. Elder M. Russell Ballard has said, " We cannot and we must not allow the school, community, television, or even church organizations to establish our children's values. The Lord has placed this duty with mothers and fathers." (Ensign, May 1991)
