Instant Choir
Come share your talents and testimony through song by participating in this year’s BYU Women’s Conference Instant Choir! Sing together with friends, relatives, and those joining you at the conference! All conference participants who wish to join the choir are welcome.
We will sing two songs written for our theme and conference:
“Rise to the Divinity within You”
The words of this anthem are taken directly from addresses of President Gordon B. Hinckley, other General Authorities, and from the Scriptures. This song may appear more difficult than it really is, with key changes, close harmony, etc.
“Speak Lord, Thy Servant Heareth”
This is a prayer of supplication from a daughter of God trying to become more humble, in tune with the Spirit, and more teachable so she can "rise to the divinity" within her and gain her exaltation. This song is much simpler, but, has several places where close harmony will need attention.
This year’s Instant Choir conductor will be Dorene Squires of South Jordan, Utah.
She is a wife, mother, and grandmother and
has served as ward music chair, sacrament meeting chorister, and stake music cochair. She also teaches Gospel Doctrine and is a former assistant organist supervisor in the Jordan River Temple. She and her husband, Norman, who will serve as the Instant Choir’s organist, recently returned after serving 15 months at the BYU Jerusalem Center, where she was hosting and concert director and her husband served as organist. They have been a team for 50 years.
Composer of the music is Nonie Sorensen, a wife, mother, and grandmother who wrote the words and music to “Grandmother” (page 200) in the Children’s Songbook and is a noted composer and musician. Sister Sorensen and her husband have spent 15 years in Nauvoo, where she wrote and directed all the musical productions there.
Rehearsal
Thursday, May 4, 2006, 6:30—8:30 a.m.
Be the first in the Marriott Center on conference day! This is our only opportunity to practice together, so we start early before conference participants arrive. Enter through the north doors of the Marriott Center and go to Portal C to find your choir seats. Watch for the signs and sit by singing parts. Practice time is limited so please learn the music and words before coming to the rehearsal. Bring your sheet music and come on time—doors open at 6:00 a.m.!
Performance
Thursday, May 4, 2006, Opening Session (9:00 a.m.)
Remain in the same seats you had during rehearsal. You will not be able to sit with family or friends (unless they are also in the choir and sing the same parts).
