MCAT Teachers Bios

Michael R. Stark, Ph.D. (Biology)
Michael Stark is a faculty member in the Department of Physiology and Developmental Biology. He has primary teaching responsibilities in Human Anatomy and Developmental Biology. Dr. Stark also conducts research investigating early nervous system development. Dr. Stark received his Bachelors degree from BYU (Zoology), his Masters degree from Idaho State University (Biology), and his Ph.D. from UC Irvine (Developmental and Cell Biology).

Lawrence S. Rees (Physics)
Dept: Physics and Astronomy
Rank: Professor
Degrees: BS Brigham Young University
MS, PhD University of Maryland

Research areas: Nuclear and environmental physics Previously worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory Came to BYU in 1986 Began teaching MCAT in 1989

John D. Lamb (Inorganic Chemistry)
John D. Lamb is currently Eliot A. Butler Professor of Chemistry and Associate Dean of General Education and Honors at BYU. He is the Editor of the Journal of Inclusion Phenomena and Macrocyclic Chemistry. He has served as a visiting professor at three universities in Italy, one in Germany, and one in China. He is the recipient of the BYU Outstanding Achievement in Sponsor Research Award, the Karl G. Maeser Excellence in Research and Creative Arts award, the Alcuin Fellowship, and was Carnegie Professor of the Year for 2000. He has published over 150 papers in the peer-reviewed chemistry research literature in the area of macrocycle-based separations.

Grant Hart (Physics)
Dr. Hart can has loved all kinds of science as long as he can remember. He earned his BS degree in physics at Brigham Young University and then went to the University of Maryland – College Park to earn his Ph.D. After he received my Ph.D., he went to the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab and worked for 2 1/2 years as a research scientist on controlled fusion research. In 1985 the opportunity arose to come to Brigham Young University and join the faculty here. His area of research is experimental plasma physics.

Dr. Hart taught Physics 105 and 106 at BYU for the first 16 years that he was here. He has always enjoyed helping students achieve the “AHA” moment when connections would be made and new concepts would become clear.

Roger Harrison (Inorganic Chemistry)
Roger Harrison has been teaching and doing research at BYU since 1995. He came to BYU after postdoctoral research at the University of Minnesota. Before his post doc, he earned a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Utah and a BS at Utah State University. He has taught introductory and advanced courses in the chemistry department at BYU.

For example, he has taught general chemistry courses such as Chem 101, 106, 107, 112, and 113. He has also taught senior level inorganic courses such as Chem 514, 518, and 619. His area of research concerns metal coordination compounds and nanoparticle synthesis.

Matt Peterson (Organic Chemistry)
Dr. Peterson received BS degrees in chemistry and biology from Utah State University in 1987. He did doctoral research in synthetic organic chemistry at the University of Arizona where he completed his PhD in 1992. His postdoctoral studies were funded by the prestigious National Institutes of Health National Research Service Award and were conducted under the supervision of Professor Robert Williams at Colorado State University (1992-1994). Dr. Peterson has been a member of the BYU Chemistry Department since 1995 and has taught sophomore organic chemistry to over 3000 students over the last 14 years.
