STARTALK Chinese Language Camp Potential Employees
June 25 to July 14, 2012
The BYU Chinese STARTALK Language Camp is currently accepting applications for staff positions
in their 2012 camp. Please review thoroughly both the course descriptions below and the camp

Staff Application
Morning Teachers
Responsibilities:
- Develop curricular materials. Teach three hours of formal class instruction per day; prepare
lesson materials; supervise morning activity period.
- Classes begin on Monday, June 25, and conclude on Friday, July 14. You will be responsible for
morning classroom instruction—from 8:00–11:30 a.m.—for a group of between 12 and 15
students. Assessments and graders will be provided.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Attend three training sessions (time and place TBA), where you will receive instructional
materials and methods.
- Participate in weekly faculty meetings on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Lunch will be
provided on these days.
- Support a small group of students as they prepare, set up, and participate in the night market
(date and place TBA).
- On Thursday and Friday, July 13 and 14, help to rehearse and decorate for the final banquet.
Other afternoon, weekend, and evening activities are optional. You are always welcome but are
not required to attend.
Afternoon Teachers
Responsibilities:
- Teach/supervise on various afternoon schedules. Classes will begin on Monday, June 25, and
conclude on Friday, July 14.
- Computer Lab Teacher: Supervise the computer lab and provide instruction in the use of
Chinese Input Method Editors and other Chinese language instruction and activities software.
Classes will be held every afternoon from 12:30 to 1:45.
- Crafts/Cooking Teacher: Assemble necessary materials for Chinese crafts, games and
cooking lessons. Each lesson will include targeted language instruction. Classes will be held
every other afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.
- Student Performances Teacher: Work with students to design, choreograph and produce
performances, including a music video and performances for the closing banquet. Classes will
be held every other afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.
- Calligraphy Teacher: Provide instruction and practice in both brush calligraphy and
handwritten Chinese characters. Classes will be held every other afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.
- Physical Activities Teacher: Create, organize and supervise physical activities possibly
including ping-pong, tai chi, soccer, volleyball and other team or individual games. Each
lesson will include targeted Chinese language instruction. Classes will be held every other
afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.

Resident Facilitator
Responsibilities:
Be on site to supervise students from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Accompany students all day Saturday and Sunday. Help students increase vocabulary and
fluency by speaking Chinese in apartments and during activities. Encourage positive
interactions among students. Help them as needed with personal concerns and to review
lessons. Organize and conduct evening activities. Supervise checkout and cleanup. Contact the
program director and Conferences and Workshops in case of an emergency. Assist with tasks
as instructed by the director.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Attend three training sessions (time and place TBA), where you will receive instructional
materials and methods.
- Participate in weekly faculty meetings on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Lunch will be
provided on these days.
- Support a small group of students as they prepare, set up, and participate in the night market
(date and place TBA).
- On Thursday and Friday, July 13 and 14, help to rehearse and decorate for the final banquet.
- Some resident facilitators may be required to drive 12 passenger vans to weekend activities.
Certification through BYU Conferences & Workshops will be necessary.

Cultural Assistant
Responsibilities:
- Prepare, organize and direct the night market. Students will be divided into small groups to
create and run various night market activities and booths. The cultural assistant will coordinate
with the afternoon crafts teacher to work with students in preparation for the night market.
- Prepare, organize and direct the closing banquet program and displays. Work with the
performances teacher to prepare the program for the final banquet.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Attend three training sessions (time and place TBA), where you will receive instructional
materials and methods.
- Participate in weekly faculty meetings on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Lunch will be
provided on these days.
- On Thursday and Friday, July 13 and 14, help to rehearse and decorate for the final banquet.
Driver
Responsibilities:
Drive 12 passenger vans to transport students to activities on Saturdays June 30, July 7 and
July 14, and one Tuesday evening. Drivers must obtain certification through BYU Conferences
and Workshops. Can also work simultaneously as a grader (see below). Ten to 15 hours
anticipated per week.
Additional responsibilities include:

materials and methods.
- Participate in weekly faculty meetings on Tuesdays from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Lunch will be
provided on these days.
- Support a small group of students as they prepare, set up, and participate in the night market

Grader
Responsibilities:
Collect, grade, and return student homework and exams. Post scores using an online
spreadsheet. Can also work simultaneously as a Driver (see above). 10–15 hours anticipated
per week.

Videographer
Responsibilities:
Document with video and still photos STARTALK morning and afternoon class activities,
student in-class performances and instruction (once a week), self-defense instruction, all
weekend activities, and the final banquet. Working closely with the director, the videographer
will film and edit music video. Responsibilities also include editing and producing a DVD of
program activities for participants.
