Job Descriptions

Morning Teachers

Responsibilities:

Develop curricular materials. Teach three hours of formal class instruction per day, prepare lesson materials, supervise morning activity period. Collect grade and return student homework and exams. Post scores using an online spreadsheet.

Mentor a student teacher that will work closely with you in the classroom. This teacher will be participating in the Startalk Teacher program.

Classes begin on Monday, June 23 and conclude on Friday, July 11. You will be responsible for morning classroom instruction—from 8:00–11:30 a.m.—for a group of between 12 and 15 students.

Additional responsibilities include:

Attend 3 training sessions before the course begins.(Time and Place TBA) Here you will receive instructional materials and methods.

Participate in weekly faculty meetings on Tuesdays at 11:30–12:30 (lunch will be provided on these days).

Support a small group of student as they prepare, set up, and participate in the night market. (Date and Place TBA)

Help to rehearse and decorate on Friday and Saturday July 11, 12 for the final banquet. Attend the final banquet.

Other afternoon, weekend, and evening activities are optional. You are always welcome but are not required to attend.

Work under the direction of the Lead Teacher to:

Afternoon Teachers:

Responsibilities:

Teach/supervise on various afternoon schedules. Classes will begin on Monday, June 23and conclude on Friday, July 11.

Computer Lab Teacher:

Responsibilities:

Supervise the computer lab and provide instruction in the use of Chinese Input Method Editors and other Chinese Language instruction and activities software. Classes will be held every afternoon from 12:30 to 1:20.

Crafts/Cooking Teacher:

Responsibilities:

Assemble necessary materials for Chinese crafts, games and cooking lessons. Each lesson will include targeted language instruction. Classes will be held every other afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.

Student Performances Teacher:

Responsibilities:

Work with students to design, choreograph and produce performances including a music video and performances for the closing banquet. Classes will be held every other afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.

Calligraphy Teacher:

Responsibilities:

Provide instruction and practice in both brush calligraphy and handwritten Chinese characters. Classes will be held every other afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.

Physical Activities Teacher:

Responsibilities:

Create, organize and supervise activities possibly including ping pong, Tai Chi, soccer, volleyball and other team or individual games. Each lesson will include targeted Chinese language instruction. Classes will be held every other afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00.

Resident Facilitator

Responsibilities:

Be on site to supervise students from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Accompany students all day Saturday and Sunday. Help students increase vocabulary and fluency by speaking Chinese in apartments and during activities. Encourage positive interactions among students. Help them as needed with personal concerns and review lessons. Organize and conduct evening activities. Supervise checkout and clean up. Contact Program Director and Conferences and Workshops in case of emergency. Assist with tasks as instructed by the Director.

Some Resident Facilitators may be required to drive 12-passenger vans to weekend activities. Certification through BYU Conferences & Workshops will be necessary.

Program Assistant

Responsibilities:

Work under the direction of the Program Directors in providing support to teachers, students and staff. Must be flexible and able to adapt to the needs of the program.

Prepare, organize and direct the Night Market. Students will be divided into small groups to create and run various night market activities and booths. The Program Assistant will coordinate with the Crafts afternoon teacher to work with students in preparation for the night market.

Coordinate and assist in preparing for the final banquet and program.

Driver

Responsibilities:

Drive 12 passenger vans to transport students to activities on two Saturday field trips and one Friday bbq. Drivers must obtain certification through BYU Conferences & Workshops.

Videographer

Responsibilities:

Document with video and still photos STARTALK morning and afternoon class activities, student in-class performances and instruction, all weekend activities, and final banquet. Working closely with director, videographer will film and edit music videos. Responsibilities also include editing and producing DVD of program activities for participants.
