Summer Educator Workshops

BYU Arts Curriculum, Teaching, and Methods Workshop

Educator and a Student

The course will cover ceramics, the illustrated book, including picture books and graphic novels, nature and landscape in art. This is a studio methods course for art educators or other teachers who want to expand their skills as teachers and artists. The role of the artist/teacher will be studied in the context of contemporary art and education. The artistic dimension of the art teacher involves talking about art, reflecting about art, and constructing connections between art and popular visual culture.

This course will explore the conceptual aspects of art making and allow students to develop work that evolves from important ideas and themes. The intent is to move beyond simple exercises in technique or style toward more imaginative efforts that will draw upon the world of contemporary art and visual culture. The content of this course will complement the knowledge gained from art criticism, including contemporary theories of formalism, ideological trends in art, postmodernism and visual culture.

Artistic production is seen as both a social statement and a personal exploration. Studio methods are about more than just the technical aspects of art making, they are also about ideas, learning to see art as social critique, and as a way to construct identity. Students will be challenged to think about art making in the service of ideas using visual signs, symbols, and metaphors to construct and communicate meaning. Students will engage in art making, while at the same time connecting what they do in the studio to their future lives as teachers.

This course is open to beginning or advanced students and both secondary and elementary teachers.

Materials: Fee will cover art materials that will be supplied. Student may also bring their own material. Please visit website for course materials, location and time of workshop.

Requirements: Studio activities will take place during instructional hours. Students will also be provided with additional readings. Each theme of the course will be accompanied by readings that will be discussed within the studio and used as a knowledge base for constructing the curriculum sketches.
