When can I register?
Registration opens in January 2008.

What are the prices?
Registration: $445
Food and Housing: $195

Who can attend?
Youth ages 14-18

How many attend the workshop?
Approximately 80-100 participants are in each session. About 15-20 students are allowed into each Summer Scholars class.

What are your registration deadlines?
The workshop is open until full. We recommend registering as soon as possible.

If the program is full; do you have a waiting list?
You may call (801) 422-8925 to be added to the waiting list.

What if I don't have a credit card to register by Internet/phone?
You can mail in a check with your name, address, phone number and Social Security number (optional, for identification use only). When it is received, you will be registered. The only risk with this method is that housing for the program may fill before your form is received.

When will I receive more information?
A receipt will arrive in the mail in 7-10 working days. Please check the receipt for accuracy.

My parent(s) work(s) on campus. Do I get a discount?
Discounts are not available.

I have a disability, can you accommodate me in the residence halls/program?
We are committed to providing a learning atmosphere that reasonably accommodates persons with disabilities who are otherwise qualified. Prior to registration, applicants with disabilities are invited to discuss the program content and available facilities with the program director. Those with disabilities who want to register should call (801) 422-7692.

PROGRAM QUESTIONS

When is Summer Scholars held each year?
Typically, the program is held in June and/or July. Program dates are picked a year in advance.

Who teaches Summer Scholars?
BYU faculty teach the classes.

What do we do each day?
The days are filled with hands-on courses, group research, labs, demonstrations, and field trips.

Do we have activities in the evenings?
Yes. Activities may include a barbecue, fireside and dance, trip to Salt Lake City, service project, and closing banquet and party.

Is this program for high school honor students only?
No. We encourage students to enroll if they are interested in academics and a university atmosphere, if they plan to attend college after graduation, and if they would like firsthand experience as a BYU student.

When is check-in?
Check-in is Monday morning between 9:00 and 10:45 a.m. in the residence hall.

When is check-out?
Participants must check out of their rooms by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday

What if I don't arrive until after orientation?
If you arrive after the orientation on Monday morning and you are registered for housing, please go to the residence hall to receive your housing assignment, then to the MSRB (Maeser Building). If you are not staying on campus, go directly to the Maeser Building or call (801) 422-7692.

HOUSING

Should I stay in campus housing or commute?
This is an individual decision. If you stay in campus housing, you will have a counselor (one counselor for every ten participants). Counselors supervise participants and coordinate activities and devotionals (scripture, song, and prayer) each evening. Campus participants are not allowed to leave the residence halls after the head count. Commuters need to be picked up by an adult after the evening at the residence halls/event sites. Commuters are welcome to participate in floor devotionals each evening.

If I don't stay in housing, where can I eat?
Workshop participants eat in the Cannon Center cafeteria. Those staying in campus housing are given a meal card for breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Those who are commuting are given a meal card for lunches only. Commuters may buy other meals on a day-to-day basis in the cafeteria. Meals range from $4.75 to $7.99. Partial meal cards (i.e., lunch and dinner, breakfast and dinner) are not available.

How much does it cost for campus housing and food? What does it cover?
Campus housing and food costs $195 per participant. It covers double-occupancy accommodations in campus residence halls from Monday evening through Friday evening, with bed and bath linen also provided. Meals are provided from Monday lunch through Saturday breakfast.

When do I check in and out of housing?
Check-in is Monday morning between 9:00 and 10:45 in the residence hall. Participants must check out of their rooms by 9:00 a.m. on Saturday

Where is the housing?
Campus housing is in Heritage Halls or Helaman Halls. Housing is available on a first-come, first-served basis until the spaces are filled. Early registration is encouraged as spaces are limited. We can confirm availability of housing instantaneously if you register by phone or Web.

What are the housing arrangements?
Residence halls are double occupancy with shared bathrooms down the hall.

How can I be matched up with my preferred roommate?
To request a specific roommate, you must provide a roommate's name when registering. The roommate must also give us your name with his or her registration. If you register and choose a roommate but that person doesn't register for housing by the time it is filled or doesn't enroll, you will be paired up with another participant attending the program.

Can I have a roommate who is attending another youth program?
No, you must room with someone attending the same program.

Is early housing available?
If transportation scheduling requires you to arrive a day early, you may do so. You are responsible to pay a special housing fee that covers the cost of lodging and supervision until the program officially begins. Meals are available in the all-you-can-eat cafeterias for a moderate price. Contact BYU Student Auxiliary Services at http://www.byu.edu/confservices/ to make your early arrival arrangements. Housing after the program is not available.

I will be arriving late; where should I go?
If you arrive after the orientation on Monday morning and you are registered for housing, please go to the residence hall to receive your housing assignment, then to the MSRB (Maeser Building). If you are not staying on campus call (801) 422-7692.

What should I bring?
Bed linen is provided. Bring extra towels, alarm clock, bar soap, shampoo, slippers, drinking cup, bathrobe, and personal items.

When is information mailed?
Information is posted on the Website. If you would like to be added to the e-mail listserv, please e-mail: cw352@byu.edu and include your full name and complete e-mail address.

When will I get a brochure?
A brochure is mailed in December or January. All information is posted on the Web site as it becomes available.

Unfortunately, this is confidential information that we are unable to give out.

Is there a shuttle service between the Salt Lake City Airport and BYU?
BYU does not coordinate any shuttle services between Salt Lake City and Provo. There are companies that offer shuttle services between the airport and Provo, but you will need to contact them directly. You can call Express Shuttle at 1-800-397-0773. It is up to each participant to find his or her own transportation to and from BYU. For more information click here.

MISCELLANEOUS

What is the BYU Honor Code?
http://honorcode.byu.edu/ Participants attending the workshop are required to uphold guidelines as represented in the Honor Code. They must maintain the standards of Brigham Young University (i.e., high standards of honor, integrity, language, and morality; abstinence from tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, and harmful drugs; and modesty in dress). Shorts and skirts worn on campus must be knee length; no sleeveless shirts, bare midriffs, or tank tops are permitted.

Dress standards are strictly enforced. Participants found in violation of the Honor Code are subject to immediate dismissal without a refund. Parents are responsible for picking up a participant who has been dismissed and paying any costs incurred for transportation.

What should I wear at Summer Scholars?
Participants may wear pants or knee-length shorts. The dance requires Sunday dress (shirt, tie, slacks for young men-no levis; dresses and skirts for young women). All clothing must adhere to the dress standards listed in the BYU Honor Code.

What will the weather be like?
Weather could be rather warm during the program. Average high temperature in July is 85 to 90 degrees F; average low is 65 to 70 degrees F. Come prepared for changeable weather and varying indoor room temperatures.

What are the dates for the following year?
Program dates for the following year will be announced in September.
