Early Bird Options

For conference participants who arrive on Monday, August 4, here are some “early bird” options available before the workshop officially begins on Tuesday morning. Get a head start on your week of organ instruction or get some extra help before the workshop. Maximize your time at BYU by taking advantage of these opportunities.

Important note: Except for private organ instruction, these options are available only on Monday, August 4.

Free Preworkshop Seminar

Douglas Bush will teach a preworkshop seminar entitled A “THUMBNAIL SKETCH” OF THE ORGAN AND ITS HISTORY. The class will take place on Monday, August 4, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. This workshop is open only to those registered for the BYU Organ Workshop.

Private Organ Instruction

These 25- or 50-minute private organ lessons will offer you an excellent opportunity to receive help in any area of organ playing. Play hymns or your choice of organ repertoire that you have prepared. The instructor will comment on your preparation and provide guidance for future study. The cost is $25 for 25-minute or $40 for 50-minute lessons, payable upon registration. Private instruction is also available throughout the workshop with selected instructors. You will be able to sign up for a preferred time and teacher online. (Remember that there will be several opportunities for personalized feedback from various instructors during the supervised practice sessions at no extra cost.)

Organ Instruction Level Placement Auditions

Unsure about your level of organ ability? Find out by attending a 15-minute session with an instructor. Play a well-prepared hymn and/or a piece from the organ literature, and the instructor will recommend the organ instruction level that is more appropriate for you. The cost is $10 per appointment. Please enroll and pay for this option when you register for the workshop. If you indicate your e-mail address, we’ll respond when our list of times and teachers is available. If you do not have an e-mail address, we will contact you by phone to set up an appointment.

BYU Independent Study Played Exams

Students enrolled in Music 399R (Organ Performance) through BYU Independent Study can schedule one- or two-hour appointments for played exams. The cost is $30 per hour, payable directly to the instructor. E-mail jean.hwang@byu.edu or call (801) 422-4785 to schedule an appointment.
