John Manfredonia D.O. FAAHPM, FABFP is the medical director of VistaCare of Tucson. Dr. Manfredonia will be using a power point integrated hand held participant response system and will instruct participants on Hospice specific topics to include case studies, ethical and psychosocial issues and clinical standards of care. Using the same system, questions will be asked prior to and after each educational point to immediately and confidentially show the participants responses graphed and embedded in Dr. Manfredonia's power point presentations.
Anna Beck MD is the medical director at Community Nursing Service in Utah. She is a medical oncologist who has been involved in the treatment and care of oncology patients and terminally ill patients since 1989. Dr. Beck will discuss end of life care and the use of sedation in end of life care. She will discuss when it is appropriate and when it is not. She will address the goals and objectives to be accomplished as well as the legal, ethical and moral issues involved.
Susan B. Childress RN, MN, OCN, has worked in the field of Nursing and Oncology for the past 26 years. Most recently she has been the Nurse Manager of a 19 bed acute care surgical oncology unit. She is the Member of Utah Hospice and Palliative Care Organization and is the Co-chair of the Ethics Committee. Ms. Childress will teach the difference between an ethical issue and a legal issue. She will help participants understand when it is appropriate to consult others (Ethics Committee) at your institution/agency. She will also help participants to understand the steps of an ethical discussion.
Gary M. Garner MD, RPh. is the medical director of VistaCare of Utah and has been working in the Hospice and Palliative Care field for the past ten years. He has also served as the Area Medical Director for VistaCare for 5 years. He is board certified and a Diplomat of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Garner using case studies will address causes, complications ethics and treatment approaches of Terminal Bowel Obstruction.
Bretton Newman MD is board certified in Family Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Newman will name emotions one may encounter when delivering bad news to patients and families. List what each letter in the "SPIKES" protocol stands for, and will describe some of the historical changes that have evolved over time regarding delivering bad news.
Perry G. Fine MD is board certified in the following: American Board of Anesthesiology, Pain Management, Hospice and Palliative Medicine and a Diplomat, National Board of Medical Examiners. Dr. Fine will address the consequences of untreated pain in older patients, the prevalence and etiologies of chronic non-cancer pain in older patients and the pharmacologic and Non-pharmacologic strategies involved. Also covered will be the challenges of monitoring pain treatment in the non-self reporting patients.
