Order and Chaos from the Classical to the Christian World
Cecilia M. Peek, Classical Studies
This course introduces classical ideas and ideals about “community,” what the Greeks, beginning with Homer and the archaic polis, believed about how the ordered community first emerged, what it was and should be, why we need it, how we should order it, and what forces of our human social natures sometimes threaten to undermine it. We will trace the development of these ideas in key Classical authors and then consider their reception and use by Christian thinkers, including Joseph Smith.
