Stealing with Style, Killing with Class: Classic Crime Films
Daryl Lee, Film

Five summer matinees, five classic crime films: crime films are obviously about bad guys and evil deeds, but they’re also about artists and (film) artistry. This course will consider how great directors use crime genres as parables to think about the artistic process itself - what makes a film exciting, how to break the “laws” of art and make money too, and why some film art fails. No previous experience with film is expected; we’ll pick one basic element of film and study clips together each day (photography, mise-en-scène, editing and narrative, sound, and acting).
