Adult Ballroom Dance Camp

BYU Sports Camps
Announcement Due to the high volume of women registrations, women must now have a man with them at the time of registration in order to enroll in the camp. The man does not have to be the woman’s dance partner for the week (this is simply to keep the numbers as even as possible) Please call (801) 422–7589 when ready to enroll both the woman and the man. (Do not enroll the man first, then call to enroll the woman, they must both be enrolled when you call.)

Men may still enroll individually.

Registration for Adult Ballroom Dance Camp begins on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. MT.

Whether you’re just a beginner or a seasoned veteran in dancing, BYU’s Adult Ballroom Dance Camp has something to interest you.  In its 27th year, this exciting camp offers the best in both International and American styles of ballroom dancing.  Each day of camp provides up to seven hours of dance instruction with world-renowned professional instructors.  This memorable weeklong camp also includes a banquet, awards ceremony, camp dance, and closing showcase in which each participant performs what he/she has learned!

During free time, enjoy exploring the beautiful BYU campus, which offers three museums. Take advantage of the recreational facilities (small additional fee required), including an indoor pool, track, and weight room.

Come make new friends and enjoy dancing with some of the world’s top professionals!

Directors
Lee and Linda Wakefield, artistic directors of the BYU Ballroom Dance Company, head the BYU Adult Ballroom Dance Camp.  They are 18-time winners of the British Formation championships and are 2-time United States Professional Theatre Arts champions.  Lee and Linda have directed the camp since 1981.  Their experience has enabled them to provide participants with the maximum opportunity to learn and enjoy ballroom dancing during the five-day workshop.

Tuition $425 ($25 nonrefundable)
Tuition covers approximately 30 hours of dance instruction, midweek banquet, camp novelty item, and dinner at the closing showcase on Friday night.

Housing
Unfortunately, due to continued construction, we are unable to provide on-campus housing this summer for the adult ballroom camp. Please see our off-campus housing options below for other accommodations.

Food, Optional $70
A pocket-size meal ticket will be issued to those who wish to have quick access to meals on campus.  The ticket may be used at the Cannon Center cafeteria, the Cougareat, the Creamery, and various snack bars on campus, as well as the vending machines.  The balance on the meal ticket decreases by the amount of purchase.  No refunds will be given on any remaining balances.

Shuttle/Parking Passes

We are aware this has been a great concern for many of you. We have done our best to secure spots for camp participants as close as possible to the Wilkinson Student Center, where the classes are held. Due to campus construction projects, our visitor parking options are very limited. Here are a few options:

  1. We have a very limited number of parking passes that will permit you to park in the large "Y" parking lot just east of the Wilkinson Student Center. Because we have so few, we ask that you call in and request a pass by June 15, 2009, at 5:00. We will review them and assign them as we feel necessary and most beneficial to all participants. We will give priority to those willing to carpool and bring other participants with them and to those who are able to fit a larger number of participants in their vehicle. We will email you by July 1, 2009, if you are selected. Parking passes will be distributed at check-in. To request a parking pass, please call Amy Stephens at (801) 422–8713 or Chelsy Erickson at (801) 422–4854. Please have the following information ready:
    • Name
    • Phone number and e–mail address
    • Session you are attending
    • City and state
    • Tyep of car and passenger capacity (including driver)
    • Where you will be staying while attending camp (hotel, home, rellative, etc).

  2. Two small visitor parking lots are also available on campus (one is just east of and one is just north of the Wilkinson Student Center). You may try to park in one of these small lots, but there is no guarantee that you will be able to find a space.

  3. Shuttle services will also be provided. This service will be running between select area hotels (those listed on our website) and the Wilkinson Student Center. A shuttle will also run between the BYU Conference Center visitor parking lot (the large lot northeast of the Marriott Center) and the Wilkinson Student Center.

Additional information, including maps with parking lot locations, shuttle routes and times, will be available at camp check-in.

Airport-to-Campus Transportation
Brigham Young University is located in Provo, Utah, approximately 50 miles south of the Salt Lake International Airport.  BYU can be reached from the north or south via Interstate 15, taking exit #272 (University Parkway).  A shuttle service is available for transportation from the airport to the participant’s destination.  For details on this service, please contact Express Shuttle at 1-800-397-0773.

Credit, Optional, $75
One semester hour of Dance 500R college credit is offered.  Participants must declare their intent to register for credit at the time of registration and must have a high school diploma to receive credit.  In addition to attending classes, those registered for credit must submit an essay on a topic to be announced.  The program directors will provide information for 500R requirements on the first day of camp at the orientation meeting.

Instructional DVD*, Optional, $199
A DVD containing instruction by the professionals will be available to camp participants only.  The material contained in the DVD is the same as the material taught in the classes throughout the week.  Please note that these DVDs are copy protected with macrovision and cannot be duplicated.  Order forms will be available at the camp.

*Please note that this is only available to those participants of the related camp.

Private Lessons, Optional $95
Participants may request private lessons from the professional instructors of their choice.  You must have a partner to assist you with your lesson or make arrangements with Linda Wakefield for a partner.  Lessons are coordinated through Linda Wakefield at (801) 225-5857 or e-mail linda_wakefield@byu.edu. Please contact Linda only after you have received a confirmed spot in the camp.  Please do not include private lesson payments with your camp tuition.
