This system is patterned after the card catalog at the public library. When you go to the library for a book, you first look up the book’s title in the card catalog where it is listed on various cards according to author, title, and subject. A number then directs you to the proper shelf.
This system also works beautifully on a smaller scale in a home. I have a small master file, or card catalog, where every item in my filing cabinet is listed on a 4” x 6” card. This is done according to title (if there is one), author, and subject (several on them, if necessary). Then a number leads me to the item in my filing cabinet or other storage areas. In the filing cabinet itself, items are placed in order numerically, with 25 items in each folder. The first folder holds #1-25, the second #26-50, and so forth. The master card file serves as an index to help me locate a particular item.
