Title: "A
Shorter Path to Family Home Evening"
Exhibitor: Julie Kiser
Description: Information to begin and enhance FHE
groups. Ideas and
helpful hints to make having a FHE group productive, worthwhile and
lots of fun.
How-To's: Suggested
Criteria
1.
Each lesson is to be in it's own folder (either legal or letter
size). If the folder is not going to be
used as a game board, seal the sides closed. Write the title and list of
contents on the outside of the folder.
2.
Each lesson should contain a lesson plan. This includes an outline of the lesson with the objectives and
questions to be asked during the lesson.
3.
Each lesson should include at least one story illustrated. Use flannel-board pictures, flipcharts,
objects or other colored pictures ready to be used.
4.
Each lesson should have one activity (game, riddles, painting
experiences, crossword puzzles, word searches, etc.)
5.
Each lesson should have one scripture idea using stories, pictures,
etc.
6.
Each lesson should have one song that can be sung to go along with the
title of the lesson. If families do not
have the Church songbook or Primary music books, provide a copy of the song in
your folder.
Make things
DURABLE. Put things that will be used
by children or used all the time on cardstock and laminate where possible. Pelon can be used for flannel-board stories. Stories, music and lesson plans can be on
regular paper in a sheet protector.
Please make sure
that each lesson meets the 6 criteria above.
Check through each folder before bringing to the exchange. It is not fair to others if the folders aren't
complete.

1.
Make It Fun: This should be a
great experience for each member. Enjoy
this time together sharing ideas and talents but most importantly have fun!
2.
Keep It Simple: Don't go
overboard. Remember a child's attention
span is short. Keep lessons and stories short and
simple. Have pictures basic without too
much detail.
3.
Exchange Schedule: Meet as
often as is comfortable for your group.
Some groups find that once a
month is good, others meet once a quarter.
Choose what works for your group.
4.
Rotate Houses: Taking turns
being the hostess is fun. After you
have chosen an exchange schedule,
determine who will hostess which days.
As the hostess, you can serve light refreshments or a full meal. Just remember to keep it stress-free and fun.
5.
Know What is Expected: Have a
meeting with all the group to set down
guidelines and criteria. If
everyone knows ahead of time what is expected there won't be any surprises later.
6.
Folder Size: Determine if you
want to use a letter or legal size folder to hold the contents of the
lesson. Either works just fine. It is a
personal preference.
7.
Stories: If there are older
children in any of the families, you may want to have an older story and a
younger story as part of the criteria.
8.
Resources: There are many
wonderful resources available. You
can purchase commercially produced
manuals, books, lesson plans, games and
illustrations at book stores where LDS products are sold. The church publications such as The Friend, Ensign, The New Era and the
Family Home Evening manual are also
great resources.
There are so many
great ideas and themes to do for FHE group lessons. Brainstorm with your group to come up with ideas you are all
interested in. Following are some ideas
to get you started.
