BYU Summer Educator Workshops - For Teachers and Parents of Elemetary and Secondary Students.

Introduction to Spanish for Educators

Educator and a Student

The number of Spanish-speaking children in the public schools has increased dramatically during the past several years, even in areas such as Utah that have traditionally been thought of as culturally homogeneous. Regardless of a school’s approach to working with Spanish-speaking students (bilingual education, rapid mainstreaming, or some other option), there is a clear need for teachers to have enough of a grasp of the Spanish language to handle situations that arise requiring basic communication. Obviously, it is not possible to impart fluency in a foreign language in 27 hours of instruction. Therefore, the purpose of this course is to help educators, and any other interested persons, who have no background, or virtually no background, in the Spanish language to learn the fundamentals of Spanish. Attention will be given to basic vocabulary, pronunciation, and simple phrases and questions as used in the classroom. Discussion of Hispanic cultural issues will also be addressed. Participation in this course will prepare students for participation in Spanish for Educators I.
