Introduction to Gifted/Talented Education

Educator and a Student

This is a graduate-level course for elementary and secondary teachers, school administrators, and other educators who are interested in teaching and leadership responsibilities in the education of gifted and talented children.  The learning outcomes for this course are:

  • Explain the major historical, philosophical, and theoretical basis of education for gifted and talented learners.
  • Identify cognitive and affective characteristics and developmental patterns of gifted and talented children.
  • Recognize the cognitive and affective characteristics of special populations of gifted learners such as culturally diverse, economically disadvantaged, and learners with dual exceptionalities.
  • Describe appropriate identification materials and procedures.
  • Describe program alternatives suitable for elementary and secondary students.
  • Identify appropriate curricular options for gifted and talented.
  • Articulate the pros and cons of current issues and trends in gifted education.

For those seeking a Gifted/Talented Endorsement, this course will fill the Introduction to Gifted/Talented Education requirement if taken for CPSE 515R credit.
