Filling Course Requirements

Bachelor of General Studies
"The simple act of taking and completing classes has increased my self-discipline immensely."
— Sheri, Vancouver, WA

BGS course and credit requirements can be filled in the following ways.

Prior courses and credits transferred into the program:

  • Credits earned previously through BYU—when you apply to BGS, your credits are evaluated for current requirements they may fill.
  • Credits earned previously at other accredited colleges and universities—when you apply to BGS, your credits are evaluated for acceptance for transfer as well as for filling specific requirements.

Note: Credit earned more than eight years before admission or readmission (including transfer credit) will be accepted to meet university core or major graduation requirements at the discretion of the university. Furthermore, transfer courses with grades below C– will not be used to fill BYU university core requirements or emphasis requirements.

Courses and credits earned after admission to the program:

Note: It is expected that students admitted to the BGS program will take all remaining courses through BYU. Pre-approvals for earning and transferring credit from accredited colleges and universities after formal admission are given only for special circumstances to fill the university core foreign language requirement.
